The Bull Jump is a rite of passage for Hamer boys and is the culmination of several days of drinking Sorghum beer, feasting and traditional dances. They have to jump on the backs of a line of Bulls four times to become part of the ‘Maza’ (who in their turn hold the bulls in place for the jump). The women are ritualistically beaten with sticks by the boys and are willing participants in the ceremony and even taunt the boys to hit them harder and are proud of their scars.
